i'm listening to: raindrops falling outside my window
i was reading this book by andrew keen "the cult of amateur- how today's internet is killing our culture and assaulting our economy" what strong words it have
quite interesting. i went straight to the section on 1984 (version2.0). i thought the name of that chapter is so catchy.
1984- a book by George Orwell on the Orwellian" world where people have surveillance cameras in each of their homes, all of them are required to follow a particular set of rules which includes no sex (because it generates love in people). everyday they have to do marches on the streets and watch a hate video to create hatred (for a non-existence person) so they will have the energy and power to work and start war.
2.0 version. a software created to monitor our internet activities. (said to only serve for anti-terrorist purpose, but god knows!!) it rises many controversies as it invade many of our personal lives.
the both factor overlaps each other. and i am particularly interesting in analysing the 1984 novel. it's simply so thought provoking.
(a summarised chapter)
"it Begin as a moral dilemma. should you plan sex b4 meeting a cyber lover? she asked the search engine. the problem was she was married but in love with another man, as she confessed to the search engine -AOL
she followed up by meeting with the guy at a hotel and recorded intimate details in her entries on AOL. asking does God punish adultery? she opened her heart to this technology, transforming the search engine queries into a window to her soul. thoughts and feelings dat she poured into AOL reveal a woman struggling to maintain her sanity in the face of despair
she asked 2393 questions in 2months about everything that she's too shy to even ask her closest friends (male sexuality.. God's judgement..) trusting the search engine absolutely.
she tot that it will never let her down as she struggles to make sense of god's words. little does she know that her utter frankness to the internet transformed her into a global media celebrity. all the 2393 wld be released onto the internet for public consumption. she became the first victim of digital surveillance in which our deepest and most intimate emotions can be board casted.
everyone knows her, including the names of her kids, address and bedroom attire (purple lingerie), her body flaws, colour of her pubs...post-adultery wisdom(dont ever have sex with your bestfriend).....ect. she's publicly humiliated.
some questions to ponder about : how much to you trust the internet, say your blogs or some private entries. dont you think it is just a tickling privacy time bomb?
some of the information reveals us of our most vulnerable our most private, our most shameful and our most human form....
most of the web is easily heck by amateur heckers. another example i got from the book. a small renter- paul fairchild
there are two types of people in the world. one who needs a tuxedo, he rents it. and of course the other one, whom tailor make it.
paul belongs to the first category. while he was paying for the rental fee. he realised his American express has been used by 3 other different identity. all from Ebony passion escort service- prostitutes. there's over 10million identity thefts each year and only 700 are ever apprehended. the victim now have to work even harder and perhaps need to stretch his credit limit the next time he loans a tux."
there is so much in technology. i had a taste of it... foodless day... i'm learning from shawn
